Cherith is Drying Up
1 Kings 17:1-16
Elijah’s message of pending judgment upon Israel and King Ahab’s false gods brought an immediate reaction: Ahab and his wife Jezebel hated the prophet of God and sought to kill him. He delivered the Word of the Lord to Israel at a time when they had turned away from the Lord God of Israel to worship Baal. Elijah called them to return from their backsliding and to once again love and serve Jehovah. But they refused to repent and turn back. Elijah released a prophetic sign to enforce God’s call to repentance and God responded to his faith.
1 Kings 17:1 says Elijah stopped the rains from falling on the land and called for a severe famine to humble the people. Immediately all of Israel began to feel the heat and their anger at Elijah exploded. To protect the prophet from certain destruction, God hid him in a desert ravine called Cherith, east of the Jordan. There, God released to him daily provisions. He drank from the brook and ate bread and meat delivered to him by ravens each morning. God’s rich blessings sustained him and he learned to be content and satisfied as he waited on God’s further direction.
But a day came when the Brook Cherith dried up! It was prophetic sign that Elijah was to stir himself. It was time to move on in God. It was the occasion of a paradigm shift. A new way of surviving. A new understanding of God’s miraculous ability to care for him and others who needed help lay just ahead!
Recently, I awakened from a night’s sleep to this phrase ringing in my spirit: “Cherith is drying up.” Immediately, I sensed a prophetic word was coming with great significance for our ministry and also for the greater Body of Christ. The church in America has been richly blessed and ministry (for the most part) has been easy. We enjoy freedoms to preach without persecution and a general wealth unheard of in most areas of the world. But things are about to change. “Cherith is drying up!” God is about to change our normal way of doing business in the kingdom. We are in for some bumps in the road, some and pre-judgment rumblings. In my spirit, I have a knowing that our “Cheriths” – our normal sources of income and blessing – are soon to be radically impacted. And this is probably a good thing!! It was good for Elijah when that torrent course that carried the winter rains from the high places to the plains dried up. It forced him to change; to move on; to once again cry out to God for His provision and direction. Now the season was changing!
Until the American Church is faced with financial insecurity, we probably will not change. There’s something sedentary about being blessed over and over. It can make us lazy and can even usher us into presumption and spiritual pride. And these realities are dangerous in this crucial prophetic hour!! Then too, we grow to depend upon the offering plate, or our mailing list, or our employer, or the government to supply our needs. It becomes easy to placate big givers and overlook sin and compromise. What pastor wants to threaten his own financial security? What evangelist wants to offend the church treasurer? What prophet wants small crowds? Big love offerings usually come when people love us…a lot. So, we often preach and prophesy good things. But God is releasing a prophetic call to holiness. A fresh fire of His Glory is calling us leaders and believers alike to move on in God. To put away spiritual politics and compromise. Cherith drying up may be a good thing.
Reduced finances in our ministry for nearly 18 months now have rattled my cage. Be sure we have broken every curse, cut every soul tie, cast out every demon and double counted every offering. We have increased our giving to missions and intensified our prayer time. But still “Cherith is drying up”. Now I’m beginning to ask two questions. 1”…is that You God?” and 2. “…do You want to say something to me?” Of course you know by now that God let Cherith dry up for Elijah. He could have kept that brook at flood levels in the middle of a famine. But Elijah needed to move-and so do we!!
God was about to do something new and powerful to meet more of His people’s needs. More than just Elijah’s needs! But God had to get the prophet’s attention to move him from Cherith, the place of cutting covenant, to Zarephath – the smelting place – the place of further refining. So, suddenly Ravine Air cancelled their landings at Cherith and flew right on by! Can you imagine what Elijah must have thought the first time a raven carried his chicken leg right past him? He probably thought that dirty bird was just too dumb to do right. Leviticus 11 tells us ravens were unclean birds from the crow family; seizers by nature. But the bird wasn’t dumb. It was smart enough to follow God’s orders (v.4). Now, I wonder…are we as smart as the birds when our Cherith begins to dry up? Are we ready to move on? Do we really want the revival we pray about? Are we really interested in the coming harvest or are we just hiding in our churches, awaiting next Sunday’s offerings?
“Cherith is drying up!” Wake up Church! Major change is coming. Our nation’s incredible financial prosperity is coming to a breaking point. Wall Street indexes are up and down like a roller coaster. Only a dozen or so Fortune 500 companies are keeping the Market strong. But it only takes one falling domino, like IBM or Microsoft, to set off a chain reaction and a melt down.
“Cherith is drying up!” Oh, there’s still a small trickle there, but look at the Word of God and listen to the Spirit of God. He is calling us to move on. But listen!!! Just up ahead!!! There is something better. A meal barrel and the jug of oil did not run dry (v.6). God’s miraculous provision continued to take care of Elijah and some others too. There’s a great harvest coming. Multitudes of souls are coming into the Kingdom. They’re just up ahead. And our old ways of doing business won’t be adequate.
We are about to need miraculous provisions. More wealth and material blessings of equipment, vehicles and facilities will be needed than we can afford with our little Cherith. We need God’s new strategies and His miraculous provision. So, let Cherith dry up!! Move on in God. Let go of the old. Let go of your plans. Give away those Y2K provision of food to local food banks. Give now while you can; then watch God provide!
Cherith is drying up…HURRAY! It is moving time!
